More Monte Carlo Method

     Welcome to 2002...

Chapter 2 of the MCNP 4A Users manual has a somewhat long description

of the history of the Monte Carlo Method(s). Probably, MCNP 4A is an old

version of MCNP by now. An MCNP training course is advertised in the

January, 2002 issue of the health physics newsletter. The course is being

offered by Los Alamos Lab. The description of the history of the Monte Carlo

Method is buried in chapter 2.

An early reference to the Monte Carlo method is: Metropolis and Ulam,

"The Monte Carlo Method", J. Amer. Stat. Assoc., 44, 335 (1949).

This is from Chapter 2 of MCNP4A Users Guide. Dr. Stabin, whether this

paper has the quote you are looking for, I don't know. Good Luck.

Enrico Fermi, apparently, started doing Monte Carlo calculations in his

head on nights when he had trouble falling asleep. Imagine what he could

have done with a current PC/Workstation with all the bells and whistles.

     A $2K PC + $2K MCNP (Code) = Serious Science....

Anyway, Everyone have a great (and productive) New Year.

                                                                 J.R.

Preisig, Ph.D.
