Numerous studies have shown that smokers present a very good 

approximation of their smoking.  There are some questions about the 

validity of certain ethnic sub populations and young people.  



Cohen used county sales tax because that was the best data he could 

find to represent the county.  He used other sources to get at 

smoking rates but they were all less rigorous than the individual 

smoking histories obtained in case-control studies.  Remember with 

sales tax, many people cross the state boarders to get cheaper smokes.
