What's your excuse for the following, Norm? Have you retracted your press

release, or admitted error? :-)

On 17 Jan 2002, I wrote to Norm (1):

If you look closely at their safety report, you will probably see that such

an object, hitting containment in the worst possible way, penetrated

containment by a couple of inches (from memory). Please check your reference

and let us know what it says. I had looked it up a few months back for

another plant. If your claim is that all they can withstand is a

tornado-driven telephone poll, and anything else would cause failure, it's

incorrect.

The same day, Norm replied (2):

"I'll answer the rest of your post later."

Despite this, Norm wrote a letter to the editor on 19 Jan 2002 (3):

"Attached as a word file and below in text, is my letter to the

editor... Salem Units 1 and 2 can not withstand much more than a flying

telephone pole... (Norm Cohen is Coordinator of the UNPLUG Salem Campaign)."

Please allow me to dispell this myth propagated by the Unplug Salem

campaign once and for all...

>From the Salem NPP Final Safety Analysis Report (4):

"Category I structures including reactor containments, auxilary

buildings, and fuel handling buildings are designed to withstand tornado

missiles"

These missiles include a 13.5-inch diameter, 35-foot long, 1490 pound

utility pole traveling horizontally at 144 miles per hour.

"Penetration has been calculated to be approximately 10 inches [25

cm], much less than the thickness of the wall or roof. This will not cause

any damage inside." All Category I structures are made of at least 18

inches of concrete.

"Safety-related plant structures are less vulnerable to a passenger

car missile."

I note that the Salem containment is 3.5 to 4.5 feet [107 to 137 cm]

thick of reinforced concrete, and has an additional steel liner (5). There

are additional concrete walls between the containment wall and the reactor

vessel.

I can only conclude that UnplugSalem will not allow the facts to get

in the way of their media campaign :-(.
