I believe dictionaries began as prescriptive documents; now they're merely
descriptive. Unfortunately.

Rick,
You can't trust dictionaries. Their authors include a lot of words only
because enough people use/pronounce them incorrectly. For example, "ain't"
and my pet peeve "preventative" were not in the dictionaries a few decades
ago. "New-Q-ler" may be there, but that still doesn't make it right.

On another list someone responded to the mispronunciation
by suggesting it was all part of Bush's strategery.
BTW, the online Merriam-Webster dictionary gives both
pronunciations for 'nuclear' -
Main Entry: nu·cle·ar
Pronunciation: 'nü-klE-&r, 'nyü-, ÷-ky&-l&r
Function: adjective
Date: 1846
The site also has audio .wav files to hear the word.
