RE: dose limits for members of the public
Jim,
I agree with everything you state. The truth is, what we believe just can't be
supported scientifically. I only take issue with statements that categorically state
that there are definitely no problems above whatever value the individual wants to
push. There is a big difference in stating that many individuals receive medical
exposures above some value, be it 5 rem or whatever. These exposures are limited
to specific body parts. These are not wholebody irradiations. In the dialogue, I
believe that those pushing a value at least acknowledge that fact. Another point,
these individuals aren't receiving the 5 rem every year, which is the potential dose
as recommended by some to be used for the public dose limits. While it is true
that not every individual will be exposed to this, the setting of a public dose level
assumes that any individuals can, if possible, receive that dose. Therefore,
whether or not a person will or not be exposed every year is a moot point. A dose
limit allows the person to be so exposed.
I am not against setting a public or occupational dose limit higher. I just want those
proposing it to stand behind so e logic, basis and scientific evidence. I don't think
that personal experience or assumptions cuts the level of evidence.
