RE: dose limits for members of the public

Sandy, Friends,

This is where science completely breaks down in rad protectionism.

Contrary to the idea that we have no evidence of no harm, millions of people have gotten more than 5 rem from medical exposures with no adverse effect, workers in the higher dose ranges have no adverse effect and substantial evidence of less cancer and other diseases, and longer mean lifespans. Substantial evidence of biological/health benefit. There is NO evidence to the contrary.

The concept of a sensitive population is also unfounded in the 100s millions of people that have received the low-moderate radiation of applicable diagnostic and some therapeutic radiation exposures (vs. a few conditions with adverse response to high doses in cancer therapies).

Regards, Jim

Don,

While there may be some validity to the above, I don't agree. There is an assumed

acceptance of risk on the part of an occupationally exposed individual. There is no

consent from a member of the general public. I also believe that whatever the

perceived savings are, as you state above, we would expend exponentially more in

litigation, due to all kinds of claims being filed.

I also don't agree that we can say that there is no harm to a worker when they have

received 5 rem for each year of their employment. There is no evidence to support

that.
