Re: Bond...Victor Bond
Good memory Mark. I can't put my cursor on a copy of a later Bond paper that
summarized his thesis, but John Cameron summarized Bond's thesis as follows
(1998):
"Damage to tissue is primarily related to the energy absorbed. It is known
that the lethal dose for 50% of the people (LD-50) is about 5 Gy to the
whole body. Assume a 70 kg person, the energy absorbed is 5 J/kg or 350 J.
The energy necessary to cause one cancer in a large group of exposed people
is about 3500 J (no one of which received more than 0.5 J). That is, to kill
a person by inducing a fatal cancer requires ten times as much energy as to
kill one person outright from other types of radiation damage. This is
discussed in NCRP Lecture No. 15 by Victor Bond 'When is a dose not a dose?'
1991. "
Bond goes on to show that radiation "dose" in terms of "energy/unit mass" is
not valid. When larger populations of animals, etc. are exposed to a given
dose to "improve the statistics," actually the experimenter is adding energy
to the system, whether to more cells, or more people. Bond shows that
cancers are tightly correlated with total energy imparted, including the
Japanese a-bomb survivors.
Regards, Jim
