Training Text Analysis
Radiation Group,
A few years ago I wrote a text that I use to teach radiation workers in a
general laboratory environment. The University where I work produces the
text for me. I receive very little for the text. Outside individuals have
had difficulty obtaining the text becuase it would be a conflict of interest
for the bookstore and they have encouraged me to produce it through a
publisher.
I wanted more control over the text and recently revised it. I explored
using a publisher but was not very satisfied with my response from them.
They prefer to produce thousands of text and the cost would be very high to
purchase it. I am now exploring publishing it myself. To produce the text
for a reasonable cost I would have to print several hundred copies. Coming
up with the money would require looking closely at my home (refinancing). My
wife is not very comfortable with the risk but is very supportive about
producing the text on my own. I am doing a market analyses to determine if
there is a large enough audience to sell the text before I risk my home.
My question is would any of you be interested in using this text for
training employees? At this University I require that the workers receive a
copy. The text contains 25 small chapters and is a little over 220 pages.
There are many pictures that are now in color. It is not intended for Health
Physics workers, but rather the individual who works in the laboratory and
uses radioactive materials as a tool.
If you feel this text would be of value to your program and you are
interested in purchasing one or more (if available), please let me know how
many for planning purposes. If you would like to review a small section of
it, I can send a copy through the email for you to review.
The larger the number of text that I have printed the cheaper it becomes. At
350 copies, I can produce them for under $40 (US), which is about what the
University is selling it for now. I teach approximately 40 students a year
with this text. They use the entire text. Your feedback is critical for my
decision.
