POSITION DESCRIPTION for RADIATION SAFETY SPECIALIST
JOB CODE: 03703 GRADE: 30C

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Ensures radiation safety activities within designated
area of responsibility are performed in accordance with
approved procedures and regulatory requirements in the
daily operation of WHC's byproduct material and
ionizing radiation program.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides general surveillance of radiation safety
activities including personnel, facility and
environmental monitoring.*
2. Furnishes consultation services to personnel on
aspects of radiation protection. Checks
periodically to see that approved procedures are
being used.*
3. Reviews inventory record systems to verify the
receiving and shipping of all radioactive
materials coming to or leaving the Washington
Hospital Center.*
4. Reviews ionizing radiation producing equipment
calibration and safety survey records.*
5. Evaluates personnel radiation exposure and
notifies individuals and their supervisors of
exposures approaching or exceeding the maximum
permissible or investigates levels and recommends
appropriate remedial action.*
6. Trains personnel in the proper safety precautions
to be followed when using radioactive materials
and ionizing radiation devices.
7. Reviews and coordinates designated areas of the
radioactive waste disposal program.
8. Supervises comprehensive radiation surveys and
monitors activities for detecting hazardous
radioactive conditions, measuring performance and
determining compliance.
9. Provides for leak testing on sealed radioactive
sources and for maintenance of ionizing radiation
detection devices (internally or from an
authorized vendor).
10. In the absence of the Radiation Safety Officer,
takes immediate charge in the case of all accidents
where radioactive materials have been involved and
initiates appropriate measures as may be required
to return the area to a safe operating condition.*
11. Assists the Radiation Safety Officer and Committee
in the development of safety programs as required.
12. Performs quality control check of radiation
producing equipment to assure that radiation doses
and radiation spectrum meet regulatory
requirements and hospital standards.

with the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION Knowledge of radiation safety procedures,
applicable laws and regulatory requirements as would
normally be acquired through completion of a Master's
degree in a directly related discipline.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE
Approximately three to four years of progressively
more responsible job related experience.
SPECIFIC SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must be qualified to perform quarterly/annual
medical physics testing on Mammography units. Experience
in testing X-ray (Radiographic and Fluoroscopic) and CT
machines are required.
ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE
Approximately six to twelve months to gain familiarity
with the Hospital environment, department routines and
procedures, and the full range of job duties.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Job requires relatively high level of problem-solving,
due to the technical complexity of the situations encountered.
INTERNAL CONTACTS
Internal contacts necessary to effectively advise,
consult, or counsel others to gain cooperation
and acceptance of ideas or actions.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
Work assignments are generally received in the form of
results expected, due dates, and general approach.
PATIENT CARE
Assists with patient care by establishing and/or
monitoring the techniques, policies, and procedures
used by those who deliver care.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS
Responsible as an individual contributor but
occasionally plans, assigns, and follows-up on the work
of other employees; does not have the authority to hire
or fire them.
CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION/LICENSURE
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics,
American Board of Radiology or equivalent required or
licensure by a federal or District of Columbia agency
to perform radiological safety assessments is preferred.
