RE: Annual attempt at correction
Franz,
I am sorry to disappoint you, but I am at work and do not have access to all
of my reading material. Most of what I said was for memory, and I thought
that the Soviet Union had declared war after the dropping of the atomic
bombs, but was not sure. That is why I said "believed." I certainly did not
want to make an obvious error, but apparently I did and I am glad you caught
it.
My belief that the use of the atomic bombs was inevitable remains strong.
While we have the luxury of studying history from different points of view
and interpretation, we were not there and can only see the events through
the writings of those who were. Wars should be fought to the total defeat
of the enemy. Otherwise, you have to do it again.

Oh, surprising, you b e l i e v e ??? You could have looked it up in any
history book. There are some facts: The bomb on Hiroshima was dropped on 6
Aug 45, the one on Nagasaki on 9 Aug. Russia declared war against Japan on 8
Aug and moved into Mandschuria and Korea, and occupied the Kurils and
Sachalin. Japan surrendered on 2 Sept.
These are facts which are found in any history book as I mentioned - and I
wonder how you and many others during this discussion put forward
speculations what political and military leaders might have thought 57 years
ago as if these were facts!

Your "belief" might be as poorly founded as your comment on the dropping of
the bomb and the declaration of war by the Sovjets.
