Re: Prussian Blue

Information on the use of Prussian Blue can be found in NCRP Report No. 65

(Management of Persons Accidentally Contaminated with Radionuclides).

In this report the oral administration of Ferric cyanoferrate (II) commonly

called Prussian Blue or Berlin Blue, or ferric ferrocyanide is listed as the

most effective means of removing radioactive radiocesium in man.

This publication supports what was said by the original author of this

thread, that it is not an approved drug (by the FDA) in the US. It is use is

said to reduce the biological half life to about one third of its usual

value.

The following are the references listed in the report for its use in man.

prussian blue," Z. Naturforsh. 23b, 391

human beings by prussian blue" Int. J. Biol 10, 519

radiocesium". Page 315 in Diagnosis and Treatment of Deposited Radionuclides,

Amsterdam)..

Stather, J.W. (1972) "Influence of Prussian Blue on metabolism of Cs-137 and

Rb-86 in rats," Health Phys. 22, 1

The recommended dosage of Prussian Blue is 1 Gram orally with water 3 times

daily for up to 3 weeks (or longer as required). If I have read it right,

this is the level reported to have been administered in the study by Stromme,

1968 for up to three weeks.

One final point of interest, Radiogardase is a preperation of prussian blue

marketed in Germany.

I hope this is of interest.
