Re: New book: "Tritium on Ice"
I attended a public meeting for the EIS for resuming production of
tritium back sometime in the 1990s. Initially, use of a civilian
reactor was NOT the preferred alternative. It really looked like this
was a pork-barrel plan by DOE to construct a hugely expensive
accelerator to produce tritium for a program with uncertain, and
probably declining, demand.
I was one of several people in Oak Ridge who commented that it was more
cost-effective (and reversable) to produce tritium in a commercial
reactor. That TVA--a "quasi-governmental agency"--was chosen for the
task is reasonable due to its history in supporting munitions production
for the federal government.
I do note, however, that SRS will be awarded a hugely expensive tritium
extraction facility as part of the project. Sometimes you just can't
save the taxpayers' money no matter what you suggest....
