Re: New book: "Tritium on Ice"



I attended a public meeting for the EIS for resuming production of

tritium back sometime in the 1990s.  Initially, use of a civilian

reactor was NOT the preferred alternative.  It really looked like this

was a pork-barrel plan by DOE to construct a hugely expensive

accelerator to produce tritium for a program with uncertain, and

probably declining, demand.



I was one of several people in Oak Ridge who commented that it was more

cost-effective (and reversable) to produce tritium in a commercial

reactor.  That TVA--a "quasi-governmental agency"--was chosen for the

task is reasonable due to its history in supporting munitions production

for the federal government.



I do note, however, that SRS will be awarded a hugely expensive tritium

extraction facility as part of the project.  Sometimes you just can't

save the taxpayers' money no matter what you suggest....
