The Laboratory Safety and Environmental Management Programs at UCSC are rapidly growing program that supports the University.  Environmental Health and Safety interacts with all research laboratory environments including the Center for RNA Research, the Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics the Institute for Marine Sciences and Lick Observatory.

STARTING SALARY RANGE:  $3783-$5291/month



Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience



SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Under supervision, the selected candidate will use professional judgment and will operate independently while performing professional duties in several major areas of the campus Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Program, including general occupational and laboratory safety, environmental regulation compliance, hazardous waste and materials management and emergency response.



SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:  Industrial Hygiene/Safety (general and laboratory):  participate in the, development and implementation of campus safety programs through specific processes and procedures; provide effective communication to individuals, and departments to facilitate correction of safety hazards; conduct surveys to identify, evaluate and correct safety hazards; provide laboratory compliance assistance, including training, chemical use and waste management, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety, odor investigations; assist with routine program responsibilities including air and bulk sampling, respiratory protection, complaint investigations; maintain a good working knowledge of legal requirements, guidelines, policies and good practices; develop and participate in the delivery of safety related training programs; prepare written documents and reports; Environmental Programs Compliance:  assist with development and implementation of the campus comprehensi!

ve environmental compliance program in areas of facility assessments, air permit maintenance, business plan compliance and water/storm water compliance.  Emergency Response:  participate in development of policy and procedures for response to hazardous materials emergencies; respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials,



QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE (with or without accommodation):  experience of familiarity with environmental compliance programs such; experience in performance of effective workplace, shop and/or laboratory surveys; excellent computer skills with working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and databases; excellent communication skills necessary to impart health and safety information to workers of differing backgrounds strong interpersonal skills; knowledge and experience in the identification and evaluation of health and safety hazards; basic knowledge of chemical toxicology and properties; knowledge of current legal requirements, guidelines that apply to health and safety issues; knowledge of fire, electrical and seismic safety issues, chemical use and storage principles and procedures for disposal of hazardous wastes, selection of and use of personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, supplied air respirators and protective clothing.  The abilities to:  ev!

aluate basic occupational health problems and devise solutions; use accepted professional practices to evaluate and respond to emergency situations; organize and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; deal effectively with people in the widest variety of job classifications.



SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  The selected candidate must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California and participate in the DMV Pull Notice program; must also be fingerprinted. The abilities to:  pass a post-hire physical exam; drive ½ ton pick up truck; move equipment and material weighing up to 50lbs with or without accommodations; pass pulmonary function test and have ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
