Re: David Besse Hole is full of questions

John,

There's a yahoogroup that's focsing on these Davis-Besse (OK guys, spelled

right including the dash) questions. I urge all interested radsafers to join

it: mailto:DBRVH_LTBL-subscribe@yahoogroups.com It is open to all,

pro/anti/confused

folks.

To answer your question - My own opinion from what I've read is "not likely,

but possible". There remain a number of unknowns and new scenarios that the

industry hadn't considered before. My opinion is based mostly on the opinion of

radsafe's favorite safety engineer, Dave Lochbaum. (btw, the ucs website has

lots of d-b info too).

But for you pro-nukers, consider this - even a LOCA, in which the radiation was

contained within containment, might well have been devastating to your

industry. You all should be royally pissed off at the management of D-B and at

the NRC for allowing this situation to fester.

At that yahoogroup website, there are timelines on file that show numerous

occasions where either the utility or NRC could/should have stepped in - in

time to prevent the 'near miss LOCA' and perhaps to prevent having to replace

the head.

But all the utility could seem to focus on was keeping the plant running to

generate short term profits, all of which are now spent to replace the head at

DB2.
