The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of
Compensation Analysis and Support (OCAS) has several openings for Health
Physicists in Cincinnati, Ohio.
OCAS is responsible for conducting occupational radiation dose
reconstructions for certain workers with cancer who filed claims for
compensation under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation
Program Act.
DUTIES: The incumbent provides professional health physicist expertise and
applies professional knowledge of health physics for the purpose of
assessing internal and external radiation exposure to specific organs or
tissue using the newest ICRP models and recommendations. In accordance with
established regulatory and implementing procedures, utilizes various types
and sources of information to perform radiation exposure estimates, to
evaluate individual claims with limited dosimetry information. Evaluates
historical dosimetry information for applicability to a workers exposure
scenario. Researches sources of additional information concerning facility
dosimetry practices and radiological conditions. Documents exposure
estimates in a clear concise manner, addressing all assumptions and sources
of information. Addresses the uncertainty introduced into an exposure
estimate using appropriate assumptions and models. Establishes radiation
exposure characteristics for classes of workers at various Department of
Energy and DOE contractor facilities. Interviews workers via telephone to
obtain information about past work histories, work practices, and working
conditions.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must meet basic qualification requirements outlined in the OPM
Qualification Standards Handbook. Since this position has a specific
educational requirement, all candidates must verify completion of this basic
education requirement by submitting a copy of a college transcript with the
application. Failure to submit a copy of your college transcript will
result in you not being considered for this position. Candidates for Health
Physicist must meet one of the following requirements: (A) Degree: natural
science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health
physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology,
mathematics, and/or calculus; OR (B) Combination of education and
experience--courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or
other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American
Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education
that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics
comparable to that described in paragraph A. In Addition, candidates must
have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower
grade
Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and
which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and
abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as
a knowledge of health physics concepts, principles, and practices, and other
occupational health disciplines for conducting occupational health studies
for radiation exposures.
