I think that if someone is up to the challenge, they should be present and prepared to provide balance to the discussion.  Having witnessed the past year in California's legislative session, I believe it is of critical importance for scientists to step up to the plate and try to nip misinformation in the bud, rather than letting it fester and hoping it will go away.  It won't.  It is much too easy for persons with a political agenda to foist anti-nuclear myths and legends on a naive public.  If science is to count for anything in the world of policy-making, then those with the appropriate knowledge, education and experience must participate in the whole of the political process, including those events that appear to be nothing more than fear-mongering proselytizations.
