Since when is fusion "radiation free"? The release of high energy fusion

neutrons will cause activation of construction materials and produce

quantities of carbon-14 via the n,p reaction with nitrogen-14 which is

about 80% of air and is dissolved in all water to some extent. Containment

of C-14 in a fusion reactor system may not be easy. One analysis that I saw

about 25 years ago estimated higher doses to the members of the public

worldwide from released C-14 than the trivial doses received now from the

uranium fuel cycle since C-14 will incorporate into all organic matter and

food and the tissues of the body and it has a physical half-life of about

5,715 years.
