Thanks to all who have responded, both on and off list.
Altitude and cosmic rays may be important factors in general health or
overall radiation exposure. Their correlation with radon should be much
weaker than that of terrestrial gamma radiation. I am mainly interested in
exposures that are related to radon by a physical mechanism. These have the
greatest potential to influence a study of radon vs health effects. Of
course, if altitude can be shown to strongly correlate with radon, then it
should be considered too.
