MRI article in Wall St. Journal
Feb. 27
MRI scans were the subject of a favorable article in the Feb. 18, 2003
Wall Street Journal (p. D-1).
The author wrote about a specialized MRI scanner that uses special coils
and pulse sequences to show damage that some MRIs miss. One manufacturer,
Fonar, of Melville, NY, has built a machine that allows the patient to
stand while being scanned. This has the virtue of scanning a patient who
feels pain only while standing. (Some injuries can't be detected when the
patient is lying down and not feeling pain.) Unfortunately this machine
has less than half the strength of current state of the art machines.
The article also recommends that patients ask a few questions and educate
themselves about MRIs before getting one.
