Violation at Northern MI Hospital

Medical hp's should be aware of a recent violationat Northern Michigan

Hospital, in Petoskey, MI. See Inspection Report No.

03011715/2003-001(DNMS), dated August 11, 2003, available on ADAMS, at

www.nrc.gov.

On May 29, 2003, an inspector observed that the door to the hotlab was

not locked or under constant surveillance. The staff was working in

areas where they could not observe the access point to the hotlab. This

resulted in a Severity Level III violation.

I've seen other violations written regarding failure to secure licensed

material. With homeland security concerns, this is becoming a high

priority for NRC enforcement.

Licensees should be sure that areas where radioactive materials are used

or stored are secure, and that the staff is trained to be aware that it

is not acceptable to leave the door unlocked or propped open when the

access point is not under surveillance.

The opinions expressed are strictly mine.

It's not about dose, it's about trust.

Curies forever.
