Road accident causes radiation scare

Canadian Press

POSTED AT 12:28 PM EDT Monday, Sep. 8, 2003

HAMILTON - Workers on a road project in southern Ontario got a scare when a

truck ran over a high-tech instrument containing radioactive material.

Experts were called to the outskirts of Hamilton this weekend when a dump

truck accidentally crushed a briefcase-sized gauge used to measure road

density.

There were concerns radioactive materials might have been released.

A hazardous materials team from the Hamilton fire department responded to

the scene and called the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Experts sealed off the area and tested workers for radiation exposure before

determining there was no leak of potentially harmful substances.
