Subject: Border gamma-xray devices

I have received a question from a long haul truck driver who regularly passes through the USA-Canada border. He states that he has to pass his truck through a "gamma xray machine" and that he is "12 inches from the machine when it is turned on and has to drive his truck through it at 1 mile an

hour" My question is "Are these border devices detecting radiation or giving off radiation?" and "How /or who could I write to get information about the devices?"

Thanks
