Two meetings in the DC area: Speaker is Ted Rockwell

A friend asked me to pass this along. Both meetings

are next week.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Members of the UM Chapter of Sigma Xi:

Two of our sister Sigma Xi chapters (the Food &

Drug Administration Chapter and the Army Research Lab

Chapter) are sponsoring separate talks featuring Dr.

Theodore Rockwell, Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer.

They have invited our membership to take part in these

activities. (The FDA Chapter also invites all

interested individuals -- especially undergraduate and

graduate students -- to attend, as their talk will be

held in a large auditorium.)

Friday, 7 November 2003 (FDA Chapter)

Dr. Rockwell will give a lecture and interactive

discussion at the JIFSAN Building in College Park. The

title of his talk is "Facts and Myths about Ionizing

Radiation and Nuclear Technology." Topics include:

 * What should you know about medical procedures that

use radiation?

 * What are the risks from food poisoning compared to

risks from food

      irradiation?

 * What are "dirty bombs" and how dangerous are they?

 * Does fear of radiation/radioactivity distort public

policy on energy

      choices, emergency and anti-terrorist planning?

The meeting and lecture be held in the Wiley Building

auditorium at the Center for Food Safety and Applied

Technology, College Park, Maryland from 3:30 p.m. to

5:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The

lecture is free. Just bring your questions and expect

to interact with the speaker.

Visitors should pre-register to facilitate entry into

the building and parking. Please contact Paddy

Wiesenfeld at 301/827-8526 or at

pwiesenf@cfsan.fda.gov.
