Associate Radiation Safety Specialist Position Available
Associate Radiation Safety Specialist job opening at
the University at Buffalo:
Brief Description of Duties: Inspect radioisotope
laboratories for compliance with departmental and state regulations.
Enforce regulations and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
Perform routine radiation protection surveys for removable radioactive
contamination and radiation levels, analyze samples, interpret results and
follow up on deficiencies. Review requests for experimental changes by
users of radioactive materials and make appropriate safety recommendations.
Prepare reports for safety oversight committees. Manage and conduct
departmental radiation safety training programs. Receive and process
incoming radioisotope shipments. Issue and collect personnel monitoring
devices and maintain records. Manage leak-testing programs. Receive and
process radioactive waste for disposal. Perform routine inspections of
radiation producing equipment. Perform bioassays. Calibrate radiation and
contamination detection instruments.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in
natural science or engineering is required, preferably in Health Physics.
Graduate degree in science or engineering with radiation protection courses
is desired. One year of experience in applied radiation protection is
required; courses in radiation safety or graduate training in natural
science or engineering may be substituted for experience. Experience in an
academic research environment or with radiation generating equipment is
preferred. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills and a valid
drivers' license are required. Equivalent combination of education and
experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is
qualifying.
