Deadly wind turbines

Jan. 1, 2004

The headline reads: "Blades Kill Scores of Birds. Environmentalists

oppose wind turbines in California's Altamont Pass."

According to the article, "[s]cientists estimate as many as 44,000 birds

have been killed over the past two decades" by wind turbines in the

Altamont Pass east of San Francisco. "The bird deaths have led some

environmental groups that support wind power to oppose permits for the

Altamont site", and, environmentalists say, "the wind industry is not doing

enough to stop the deaths." (The birds in question are golden eagles,

kestrels, and red-tailed hawks. The article says nothing about any birds

being killed by the power reactor at Diablo Canyon.)
