Re: WIPP shipment through Albq. NM



1.  There is no bypass around Albuquerque.  DOT regs require that a bypass be used if it exists.

2.  Any alternate route must by DOT regs be shown to be no more risky than the DOT preferred route (I have done several of these analyses in other cases).  Any route for NTS to the WIPP that avoids Albuquerque would be considerably longer and/or use secondary roads.  Any such route would entail increased risk (obviously).



DOE is not stupid, nor insensitive to risk.  These trucks have the same probability of accident as any heavy truck, and the incident-free doses are negligible or zero.  Before taking up for the protesters all the time, why not inform yourself of the facts?
