Re: Precautionary Principle



I am familiar with the GRAS policy. GRAS is a political/bureaucratic concept

intended to prevent the public from becoming aware of the basic absurdity of

our food labeling regulations. For example, many commonly accepted foods

(black pepper, celery, tomatoes, etc.) which are positive on the Ames test

would need to be labeled as carcinogens. To avoid the likely public reaction

from labeling such actions, these commonly accepted foods are simply

designated as GRAS.
