RE: Algae

Dr. Aleissa,

Algae and bacteria are well known for their uptake of radium and uranium.

Various researchers are studying the cellular mechanisms of uptake (see

papers by Derek Lovely). Uranium-bearing effluent is being treated with

algae ponds in some contaminant systems. I suggest that you go to

www.google.com and do a search with the keywords "uranium" and "algae"

(without the parentheses), then do the same for "radium" and "algae". You

will get several hundred "hits", many of which will be directly relevant to

the topic. Algae have been used as a media for uranium exploration in some

areas. We and other U.S. researchers have found high levels of uranium in

algae (several hundred ppm dry weight) in various natural uranium-enriched

aquatic systems.

Subject: Algae

I have raised this inquiry few days to the list without any response.

I need information about biomagnification of uranium (& radium) by

different organism species (particular algae). Any information or

information sources is appreciated.

Regards.
