Homemade MRI

Dear Group,

I have a professor who has made his own MRI and would like to use human

subjects as part of an experiment. The IRB has reviewed the protocol and is

okay with it but has asked EH&S for safety considerations of the unit. It is

a 0.5 telsa system that has not been approved by any federal, state or local

agency.

Can you please suggest any safety considerations for this unit? Does it need

to be approved by a governmental agency prior to use (for human subjects)?

Is he required to have a safety plan in place to operate the unit?

Any additional thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

-David
