--JAMES LOVELOCK'S CALL FOR NUCLEAR TO BE THE WORLD'S MAIN ENERGY SOURCE

appeared today in a front page story in a U.K. newspaper,"The Independent."

Lovelock, a celebrated Green and author of the Gaia hypothesis, called for

an immediate move to nuclear to limit the accelerating effects of global

warming. There is not enough time for renewables to take the place of carbon

dioxide-emitting generating capacity, he said. The attachment of the Greens

to renewables is "well intentioned but misguided," he told the newspaper. "I

am a Green and I entreat my friends in the movement to drop their

wrongheaded objection to nuclear energy." An industry source told Platts, "I

almost fell off my chair when I saw the headline." He noted that, as far as

he was aware, there had been no lobbying of Lovelock by the nuclear

industry.
