RE: Decision on nuclear fusion reactor site put off again

RE: Decision on nuclear fusion reactor site put off againHi Jaro,

Solar nuclear reactions consist of both strong and weak interactions.

The basic fusion reactions that combine hydrogen isotopes to istotopes

of helium are governed by the strong interaction forces, usually followed

by a beta decay (either positron or electron) which are governed by the

weak interaction forces. In mature stars and particularly in supernova

explosions, nucleosynthesis (involving both s- and r-processes) also involve

strong interactions, again followed by many beta-decays that

are weak interactions. So take your pick.

Have a nice day,

Fritz

Decision on nuclear fusion reactor site put off again

  <SNIP>

The ITER project is aimed at creating the world's first sustained

nuclear fusion reaction, similar to the energy-producing process

taking place constantly in the sun.

  Comment :

Reactions in the sun depend on the weak nuclear force, whereas D-T fusion

in ITER-type reactors depends on the strong nuclear force : the two are not

at all "similar," except for promotional propaganda purposes.
