Ladies and Gentlemen,

President-elect of the National HPS, Ruth McBurney

will visit Southern California Chapter of the Health

Physics Society on Wednesday, January 19th, 2005.

Additionally, since we have not had a meeting for a

while, Mike Zittle of UCLA has agreed to conduct a

mixed waste workshop in the afternoon prior to the

dinner meeting.

Date: Wednesday, January 19th, 2005.

Location: Les Feres Taix “French Cuisine at Reasonable

Price” Restaurant

(http://www.taixfrench.com/index1.htm) located at 1911

Sunset Blvd., Los Angles, CA 90026.

Dinner is $25 per person, and the selections are:

* Chicken Diable (Chicken breast grilled and served

with lemon, butter, white wine, mustard, garlic,

shallots and capers

* Beef Bourguignon (Tender pieces of beef in Burgundy

wine mushroom sauce)

Time: 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM

Title: Mixed Waste Management at a Large Academic

University / Medical Institution

Speaker: Mike Zittle, UCLA

The workshop will be free of charge.

Abstract: Mixed Waste contains both Radiological and

Hazardous / Toxic constituents and is subject to

complex regulations and legal requirements making

storage, treatment, transportation, and disposal

difficult and expensive. Management of mixed waste at

academic and medical institutions can be especially

difficult because of the small quantities and wide

varieties of wastes generated. Because these

organizations are often non-profit or government

funded, it is important to keep costs down while

maintaining regulatory compliance. Although often

perceived as difficult, it is possible to be in

compliance with all Federal and State EPA and NRC

regulations without going over budget.

This talk will focus on effective mixed waste

management techniques at Large Academic Universities

and Medical Institutions. An overview of the many

regulations and enforcement agencies will be

presented, focusing on the newly enacted EPA

Conditional Exemption for the Storage, Treatment,

Transportation, and Disposal of Mixed Wastes. Sorting

and segregation schemes for managing mixed waste will

be presented and discussed. This talk will emphasize

the importance of utilizing careful analysis and

process knowledge to efficiently manage mixed waste.

Training of mixed waste generators is perhaps the most

effective means of managing mixed waste. Creative

ideas will be presented that allow waste managers at

academic and medical institutions to effectively train

waste generators and reduce the cost of mixed waste

disposal at the same time.

Time: 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM

What: Social Half-Hour

Time: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM

What: Dinner

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: Ruth McBurney, President-elect of the

National HPS

Title: Health Physics and the Health Physics Society

in a Changing Environment

Abstract: Many external factors as well as internal

issues are affecting the future of the field of health

physics, such as the changes in the workforce (human

capital issues), the regulatory environment, and

global events. President-Elect McBurney will be

presenting a discussion of these issues and how they

are impacting the profession of health physics and the

Health Physics Society, as well as ways that the

Society is addressing the areas that are of major

importance to the profession. She plans to provide an

open discussion of the issues in a “town hall meeting”

format in order for participants to present ideas on

how the Society can support chapters in carrying out

training, homeland security, and public information

and education functions.

Please contact me with RSVP via email (preferred) or

by phone (who will be attending and with your dinner

selection).

At this time we have reserved a room large enough to

accommodate 30 people, but should there are more than

30 people, the restaurant may allow us to move into a

larger room.

Please plan to pay at the door.

Thank you.

Tosh Ushino
