The Nuclear power reactor at kalpakkam is safe, no radiation release

Dear Dr Cedervall,

There are two nuclear power reactors at the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam. There are named Madras Atomic Power Staion Unit 1 (MAPS-1)and Madras Atomic Power Station Unit 2 (MAPS-2). These are pressurized heavy water reactors(PHWR).These are located on the eastern coast of south India. The site also houses a Fast Breeder Test Reactor. Construction of a 500 MWe prototype fast breeder reactor has also been started at the site

MAPS-1 was already under shut down condition from 20th August 2003 for Enmasse Coolant Channel Replacememnt and Upgradation. MAPS-2 was working at 210 MWe when the tsunami event occurred. The power station was brought under safe shut down condition. All nuclear installations at the site are safe and there is no danger of any radiation release.

The reactor will be started after a detailed safety review by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

Dr K.S.Parthasarathy

Former Secretary,

Atomic Energy Regulatory Board
