Re: Misleader of the Year 2004 ( EMF EHSelectrosensitivityelectromagnetic ...)
Dear Dr Cedervall,
I am reminded of a scientist in India who through means fair or foul set up his own "Environmental Research Institute". He occasioanlly came out with alleged effects of one agent or other on human health, leaving public health authorities and other associate agencies to fritter away sacrce resources on imagined dangerous agents!
He once claimed that the background radiation levels in one of the capital cities of a State in India is as high as that in "Chernobyl".He specifically mentioned that the radiation levels in the quarters of elected representatives were very high. This was a ruse to corner publicity! There was the usual flurry of activity follwed by various news reports. He also claimed that his radiation instrument responded to exhaust from motor cars. The Chairman, Atomic Energy regulatory Board sent me to find out more on his "discoveries".
He used a primitive GM counter. It was sensitive to light! I covered the counter in an impervious sheet of plastic. His "research associate" was an intelligent young man; he could see the fallacy of their findings. The "Director" of the "Institute" conceded only after prolonged arguments and demonstration. He requested me not to talk to media. Later we released our findings to the press.
This item inspired a Member of Parliament to ask a few questions in Parliament.
The story ended with the timely exposure!
