The Altamont Pass wind farm was the largest in the world when it
was built about 25 years ago, but at 164 megawatts, it is very small
by today's standards. Its several thousand turbines each produce
about 25 kilowatts each, and spin very quickly and noisily. Modern
wind turbines are much larger, spin much more slowly and quietly,
have much larger mean times before failure, and produce from two to
four megawatts each, without killing any birds or gathering ice.
