> Do the bacteria selectively absorb radioactivity?
There are a variety of chemicals and microbial agents which bind
heavy metals, including their radioactive isotopes, into highly
insoluble compounds and colloids, resulting in essentially no
absorption if ingested.
Some work very much better than others, but apparently, in only
slightly different sets of circumstances, the latter others work
better than the former some.
There are many varieties of microbial techniques which haven't
been tried yet in practice, because they haven't been proven to
do more harm than good. Testing the safety of a bacterial
culture for water supplies apparently takes years if not decades.
