Swedish nuclear reactor shut down because of abnormal vibrations
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - A Swedish nuclear power plant has shut down
one of its three reactors because of abnormal vibrations in a
turbine.
The vibrations were discovered Friday and officials at the Oskarshamn
power plant shut down the reactor early Sunday.
OKG, the company that operates the plant, said there was no leakage
of radioactive material and no danger to the public. It was not clear
when the reactor could be restarted.
Nuclear fuel is used to heat water into steam that turns turbines to
produce electricity.
The Oskarshamn plant, about 250 kilometers (150 miles) south of
Stockholm, supplies about 10 percent of the electricity used in
Sweden.

Britain ``cautiously hopeful'' of agreement with Iran over nuclear
program
LONDON (AP) - Britain's Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Monday he
remained "cautiously hopeful" that Europe would reach an agreement
with Iran over the country's nuclear program.
Iran has threatened to resume some uranium enrichment activities
which Washington and the European Union fear could result in a
nuclear bomb. Talks between the foreign ministers of Britain, France
and Germany and Iran's top nuclear negotiator Hasan Rowhani are
expected to take place next week to defuse the looming crisis.
Straw said Britain, France and Germany, which are leading the
diplomatic effort, still needed "very clear objective guarantees"
that Iran's nuclear activities were peaceful and intended to generate
electricity. He said the impending presidential election in Iran on
June 17 was making the negotiations trickier, but he was optimistic
an agreement could be reached.
"I remain cautiously hopeful," Straw said.

Alstom wins 80 million Chinese power plant deal
PARIS (AP) - French engineering group Alstom SA said Monday it and
Chinese partner Dongfang Electric Group have won a contract worth
more than 80 million (US$100 million) to supply two steam turbines
for a nuclear power plant in China.
Alstom will supply two of its 1,000-megawatt Arabelle steam turbines
and generator packages to China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp. for its
Ling Ao power station in Shenzhen, Alstom said.
Alstom was also the design and supply contractor for the first phase
of the Ling Ao nuclear plant.
