Re: Ring Badges

Recently, when we applied for a renewal of out broad scope, type license,
we received a list of 18 questions from our state plan agency. One
centered on our rad safety manual (vintage 1985)--I inherited it--which
calls for finger badges for workers using P-32. It so happens that
we use exactly one 1 mCi batch once each year. And the prof who uses
it in his rad biol course, takes it immediately to the vault, pops
of the multidose cap and dilutes/divides it into much smaller amounts.
The time he spends on this is no more than 15 minutes each year!
AND he uses an uppoer body plexiglas shield AND lead-lined gloves.
I think I'm going to win this one. I don't require extremity
badges for this work. I see no reason for putting them INSIDE
Pb-lined gloves under these circumstances. Of course, things may change
under 10cfr20. I'm looking forward to some wiser answers from
the "stochasticists" ...... or is it the "non-so
xxxxxxx whaterever"?
Good luck to us all! .... ~jess <jmckenzie@cc.weber.edu>

corrigendum: line one-- make that "our broad scope, type C license"
