Re: Radioisotope Inventories

All RAM entering a facility must be under total control of the Radiation
Safety Department. Here is a brief outline as to how we approach this at
the University of Connecticut Health Center:

1. All radioactive orders are placed by the rso. We have contacted all the
vendors and gave them the names of the individuals that are authorized
to place orders from our office.

2. All RAM arrive in receiving and from which they are picked up by a member
of the rso staff. We survey the packages and log them into our database
where we compare them to the orders placed. During these procedures we
verify that onhand and authorization limits are not excceded.

3. the rso staff then delivers all parcels to the PI's at which time we get
   a signature to verify receipt.

All PI's are required to complete a semiannual inventory in which they must
tell us how much they have on hand. We tell them what they reported in their
previous inventory and what they ordered in the last six months. They must
balance the inventory and tell us what they have on hand and what the
disposition of the used isotope was (i.e., liquid to sewer, isotope transfers
etc...). We only give them two weeks to respond at which time we will suspend
ordering privilages until the return their inventory.

Hope this helps........
