I would be concerned about radon emanation from the cabinet holding the rock samples. I had the oportunity to measure the radon concentration of a cabinet containing various uranium ores, the exposure coming out of the cabinet was on the order of a few mR per hour, but the radon concentration was in excess of 1200 pCi/l.
