Actually - back when the "disc" for keeping the waste down in the drum was 
first thought of - it was just a plywood disk!

As I heard it they first started using it at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and 
the fellow who thought it up there got some sort of cost saving award.

I am not sure of the path from there to someone getting the patent and I am 
not sure if it is even the same person.

BEWARE however - even though it is as simple as a plywood disk - patent law 
is such that cutting your own plywood disc and using that would STILL be a 
patent infringement!!
