Health Physicist
The Office of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Safety at Michigan State
University is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join its
team of health and safety professionals as a Senior Health Physicist. This
highly visible and responsible position will assist in the development,
implementation and monitoring of comprehensive programs to control and/or
eliminate radiological hazards, and assure that the safety and compliance
requirements are met for the use, storage, transport and disposal at the
National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory in accordance with local,
state, federal and university rules, regulations and guidelines. Duties
for which this person will be responsible include, but are not limited to:
development and maintenance of training programs specific to the site and
functions of a large heavy ion accelerator facility; spectral measurements
of accelerator produced and other radiation; characterization and
assessment of radiation environments associated with heavy ion accelerator
facility operations and upgrades; evaluation of requirements and design of
shielding and interlocks for an evolving accelerator program; development
and maintenance of an environmental monitoring program, including soil,
water, air and activation products in other media and developing protocols
and executing research pertaining to facility upgrades. The position
involves potential exposure to radiation and other hazardous materials,
wearing a respirator, responding to emergencies and working on a VDT up to
75% of the time.
Minimum requirements for the qualified candidate are a Bachelor's degree in
Physics, Health Physics, Environmental Health or a closely related field;
three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive
experience in broad license radiation safety management and/or accelerator
health physics; demonstrated ability to know and apply radiation safety
regulations; experience in health risk appraisal; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Experience in chemical safety and
industrial hygiene, environmental monitoring, computer literacy and
superior oral, written and public speaking skills are an asset. Minimum
salary is $32,959.
