Lost radioactive shipment recovered

The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) was advised on July 26, 1994 by
Nordion International Inc., that a radioactive material package being
transported enroute from Quezon City, Republic of the Philippines to
Kanata, Ontario was missing its contents. The missing material was a
uranium shielded, steel encased source changer with the radioactive
material Ir-192 contained within a radiography teleflex cable assembly.
Apparently, the source changer had been removed from its packaging by
persons unknown. On August 5, the unpackaged source changer was found in a
warehouse in Toronto, Canada. However, there was no indication of
tampering with the source itself and it is unlikely that there was any
significant radiation exposure. The source changer was seized and is now
in the custody of the Atomic Energy Control Board. The loss is under
investigation by the AECB.
