Technician Qualifications

This is mainly for folks at national labs, DOE facilities, or other "larger"
organizations who employ some number of Radiation Protection Techs, and may
have developed fairly involved training programs. Others feel free to respond
with your opinions as well.

I'm looking for a consensus on what constitutes a fully "trained and qualified"
technician. This is specifically for radiation protection techs, not
radiological lab techs or others with ancillary duties in rad safety. If your
facility does not have techs that only do rad safety, that's fine, but please
note in your response what general duties they have.

Does anybody use the ANSI 3.1 designation? What about DOE orders that speak to
personnel qualifications - how are they interpreted? Is your training program
(if you have one) tied into the requirements therein? How do you relate field
experience to formal training, do you require any formal training at all? Does
anybody have a formal continuing training program? Do you give credit for - or
require - NRRPT registration?

Reply to radsafe or directly to me at welch@cebaf.gov.

Thanks in advance for your responses.
