Yes, there is a ton of literature out there on this subject. Too much
to cite here. As you might expect, its old. Give me your snail mail
address and I'll send you some papers with a decent list of
references.

Don't know of any epidemiological studies. They would be a waste of
time. The study population was scattered and the doses almost
unguessible. The literature does contain info on some of the
idividuals who were injured however. 

Maybe Al Bundy will find one in the basement of his shoe store one
day and we'll learn the real truth about these machines.
