O.K. Folks, it's that time again!
I'm writing to remind all subscribers of RADSAFE list that there are now close
to 600 subscribers on the list. This means that if you post a message, the
machine that runs the listserv process has to generate close to 600 - 1 copies
of your message and forward each one through various and sundry tortuous
electronic paths to the respective subscribers of this list. Many of us
already receive *dozens* of email messages each day that we have to read,
consider and sometimes respond to. So, PLEASE consider this before you hit
that send key. This list is for discussions pertaining to Radiation Safety.
You should limit your posts to factual items that will be of interest to
hundreds of people. If you wish to post a response to a message that you may
have found interesting, PLEASE, make sure that your response will also be of
interest to hundreds of people. If you are not sure, then send your response
to the person you wish to respond to via private email. This list has grown
from only 20 subscribers a few years ago; it is now a valuable resource for
people seeking answers to radiation safety related questions. We must make an
effort to keep the quality of the postings high.
If you are new to the internet, it will take a while for you to learn about
some of the subtleties of network ettiquete. Recognizing that it is sometimes
difficult to know in advance whether a particular message will be considered
appropriate by the readers of the list, let me list a few general guidelines to
help you decide what *not* to post.
In general, it is very unlikely that the following types of messages will be
appropriate for posting to the RADSAFE mailing list:
1. your political opinions
2. your religious views
3. blatant commercial advertisements
4. uuencoded files
5. your personal opinions about regulators
6. your personal opinions about licensees
7. responses to any of the above
I could list lots more but I don't want to give people any ideas :-)
