Re: Staffing in the rad safety program

Work study students can be used for several tasks, but there are a
few items to remember:

(1) Who is supervising their work to ensure it is done properly?
Good supervision takes time.

(2) Who is ensuring they are only doing appropriate tasks? Some jobs
require professional discretion or taking prudent "risks". You don't
send an unsupervised student into a potentially hazardous situation.

(3) Who does the work when the students are gone? You still have to
have minimal staffing to handle vacation periods, finals, or between
hiring.

I strongly recommend choosing younger students (soph/juniors) who you
can get 2 or 3 years of potential work out of (but are also settled
down into the academic environment - Freshmen are a crap shoot). A
good working environment and the ability to do something interesting
(as opposed to flipping burgers) are key factors in staff continuity -
which is just as important for work study students as it is for
professional staff.
