Mo-99 Generation

The following message was posted by Gus Potter. I asked John Campisi
to add his insights about the current status of this project. John's
comments are given after Gus's. I hope this answers any questions.

The DOE has chosen the ACRR at Sandia National Laboratories as the
site for Mo-99 generation. Currently the existing facility is being
prepared for use in this area. I do not know what the projected start
up date is, but I believe it is sometime in 1997.

SNL has prepared an EA for this project with the anticipation that a
FONSI would be received by the end of May, 1995. However, latest word
is that it is likely that an EIS will be required and this may
significantly impact project start and end dates. In addition to the ACRR
reactor facility, which will require relatively minor modification to
attain the steady state power levels necessary for Mo-99 generation, the
nearby (same fence) Hot Cell Facility will be used to perform the
necessary chemical separations and packaging for shipment. The HCF
requires some preparation and modification to reliably produce the molly
product and to meet FDA standards. The project plan, prior to the EA
becoming an EIS, called for limited production capability by October 1997
and full operation, post operational readiness review by August 1998.
