ABHP Certification Requirements
In following this discussion, it occurred to me that some of us are
expecting the ABHP Certification process to fulfill all of the
employee applicant evaluation responsibilities of the employer. I
don't believe this is realistic or appropriate. To the extent that
ABHP Certification serves as a credential, it demonstrates that at
some time (not necessarily now!) the CHP had sufficient understanding
of fundamental health physics concepts to pass Part I and sufficient
ability to apply those concepts in the assessment and solution of
health physics problems in a work setting to pass Part II.
Recertification requirements reflect continued interest and education
in the field. It is appropriate that our certification process perform
this function for a profession dedicated to radiation protection.
Other requirements for any position (e.g., management ability,
familiarity with laws and regulations only indirectly related to
health physics, communication skills, sensitivity in dealing with
people) will be job-specific and are better addressed by the potential
employer. The employer should decide if a degree is required and what
degrees might be appropriate for the position. The employer should
also check references and experience to determine if other job
requirements are met. The ABHP is not certifying Renaissance man (or
woman); it is certifying fundamental and applied knowledge in
radiation protection. This knowledge can be acquired - and
demonstrated - in many ways. Both the employer and the HPS should
appreciate the limitations on the CHP designation as a credential.
