An earlier message discussed a problem in Columbus, Ohio. Actually it's in
Cleveland but the crux of the issue is that a licensee was apparently making
legal discharges of Co-60 for several years which re-concentrated during the
sewage treatment process: hence the wastewater folks have a LARGE amount of
slightly contaminated ash on their hands. I heard from an NRC person at a
HPS meeting recently that all parties involved agree it's not a health or
safety hazard but as you might expect there's been lots of bad publicity on
the whole issue.
